THE ORIGINALS

Boston College Rugby Football Club was founded in September 1968 by a group of part time athletes and full time characters with nothing better to do on Saturday mornings. We were fortunate to schedule our first Practice at the home field of Boston Rugby Club, and at the same time as their practice session. We were most fortunate that the Boston side sent over three of their more distinguished players to instruct us in the fine art of rugby including two stocky Props with no teeth, and one skinny Irishman with black glasses – Ken Daly. And the rest as they say is history. From that day, Ken has committed himself to teaching the Laws, and skills of rugby to successive generations of men and women at Boston College and in so doing became our coach, counselor, parent, and friend. Ken’s passion and love of the game have transcended generations of BCRFC players and their offspring and explains in part why rugby is the fastest growing sport in the Country. Ken, the BCRFC Originals can’t thank you enough for all that you, and your understanding family, have sacrificed for us. You are constantly in our thoughts, occasionally in our prayers (when we remember to say them), and always held in highest esteem.
BCRFC ORIGINALS (SPRING ‘69)
There once were some boys from BC
Who wanted to learn some rugby
To the Circle of Cleveland
They went with their friends
And they found their man Coach Kenny
Now Kenny could clearly see
No talent had these boys from BC
He said, you’re ugly buggers
But soon, I’ll make you ruggers
And Ken yelled at them like a banshee
He taught them to ruck, pass, and scrum
Despite their looks, these boys weren’t so dumb They learned a few plays And how to win second phase And before long, fans started to come
Years passed, the boys’ hair become grayer Their bones creak as they walk up the stairs They tell their war stories On and off the pitch glories Forever,
they’ll be rugby players!
Now Kenny’s getting long in the tooth
Yet by coaching, hangs on to his youth
He’s switched to the women
Because they will listen
And they’re prettier, to tell you the truth!
